The other day, I did something I’ve always wanted to do: a sensory treasure hunt. This is a game I invented, that you play with a friend (or a lot of friends) in a large store.
Each team/individual finds five items. Each item is distinct in a way that links to one of the five senses – sight, taste, touch, hearing or smell. When you have your items, you meet the others and decie who wins (or, for bonus points, you buy all the items, swap them around, and have to invent a way to eat and/or use them in combination).
I found:
Sight – eggplant (those things are just weird)
Smell – whiteout
Taste – liquorice
Touch – a coconut
Sound – a pack of dried noodles in a cup.
My friend found:
Sight – kupie doll mayonnaise
Smell – soap
Then she got distracted and bought a pink grapefruit bacardi breezer. And a pack of passionfruit ones. Then she saw a rope tower playground and. . . well, you know the rest.
Publisher K just requested the rest of my realist novel (based on the beginning, which I sent them about a month ago). Cool. The email I just received wasn’t from my contact, which is interesting – although my connection to the contact was extremely tenuous (I saw her speak, but didn’t get to talk to her – I addressed my query letter and sample to her as per the website’s instructions).

Charlie here is a fan of the double breasted waistcoat with morning dress – http://tinyurl.com/2eyf6bw – not a common sight these days but I think I’d like to have one made when I get a suit of some description done here (just found a great tailor). Actually, looking closely, he appears to have a white single breasted waistcoat on underneath it! Maybe it was a particularly cold day?
I quite like morning dress and would love to have opportunities to wear it. It’s essentially at the same level of formality as the dinner jacket, but for daytime events.

Myself, I’m still struggling to become published. My work is present on the internet, but has yet to make it through the slowest referee on earth to actually appear in a published scientific journal. http://arxiv.org/find/all/1/all:+AND+bloomfield+jolyon/0/1/0/all/0/1 if anybody wants a glimpse into the life of a science PhD student!
Jolyon: As I back away from finding more about life as a phd student (I know enough to back away), I simultaneously extend the nod of understanding re: publishing. It really does suck.
